* And here is some info on poppy seeds.

Poppy seeds are pollen of Poppy flower. There is many different varieties of this flower: white, pink, yellow, orange, red and blue. Also seeds look different, they can vary from almost white through light gray, dark gray to dark blue colour. Poppy seeds that are the most commonly used in baking are from opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). Unripe fruits of the same Poppy are used in production of opium. And as it was proven by Myth Busters (TV program) consumption of bread or cake containing poppy seeds can give false result during drug testing.

Your thoughts…

  1. Margot, this is so special!!! I have never tried this cake, but I bet it must be beautiful! Great photo, too. :)

  2. When my daughter was in elementary schoool I use to volunteer. Every Thursday the teachers would have treat day and poppy seed loaf was always present. I know why it is one of your favourites!

  3. My mother also made poppyseed cakes and I loved them. I haven’t had one in years…ever since the bit about ‘testing positive’ came out.
I think it’s time to change that… and bake a poppyseed cake!

  4. Well there is certainly no mystery why this cake would be given that name (lol)

  5. Hi Margot, your mom’s recipe sounds wonderful. Thanks for sharing it.
And did you know that Singapore banned poppy seeds? The people responsible for that should watch that episode of myth busters!

  6. I love poppy seeds. Interesting to know that it’s true that they can cause drug tests to be positive. I thought it was a myth. However, they’re not about to spend the money drug testing teachers here with funds so tight, so no worry about that!
