Additional information for parents/careers:
If it is a lunch for kids it should (but does not have to as long as they are getting all necessary nutrients during the day) contain one item from each categories:
- carbohydrates (tummy fillers): sandwich, wrap, muffin, quiche, pizza slice, pasta salad, rice salad, couscous salad, bread sticks, crackers, bananas;
- proteins (meat, fish, eggs, beans): tuna sandwich filler, slices of ham in a sandwich, pieces of chicken in salad;
- fruit & veg (vitamins & minerals, part of 5 a day): fresh, tinned or dried fruits, nuts (only when allowed), seeds, fruit salad, jelly made with fruit pieces and natural juice, raw vegetables, salad leaves;
- dairy products (calcium for growing bones): yogurt, fromage frais, yellow cheese, rice pudding, custard, cottage cheese, cream cheese;
-drinks (to keep them hydrated): water, fruit tea, milkshake, smoothie, juice, plain or flavoured milk);
- treats (as a element of surprise): some little sweet (preferably homemade), sticker, fun food pick or favourite fruit (I usually hide lunchbox items in fridge drawer so I can surprise my daughter with some blueberries or other things she loves and is not expecting that day).
Items that are not recommended include:
- nuts (in most primary schools they are banned due to allergies);
- chocolate or chocolate covered biscuits and generally sweets;
- rich in salt, processed snacks such as potato crisps;
- snacks rich in sugar, even many cereal bars contain extra added sugar;
- fruit drinks that has little real fruit and plenty of sugar and artificial colours and flavourings;
- fizzy drinks.
I’m looking forward seeing your entries … Margot

Awesome! I’ll try to participate and share my packed lunch. Its quite cool! Oh well is there a competition like the most healthy packed lunch that supports environmentally friendly containers? I think it will be great too. What do you think?
>Happy Tiffin everyone!

Great, looking forwarding seeing your entries!
Yes, environmentally friendly containers such as metal fiffins are great idea but not for very small children. Even regular food containers sometimes are very hard to close and open. The only lunchboxes that don’t cause any trouble to my 4 year old are Japanese bento boxes. They are definitely more environmentally friendly that plastic sandwich bags that are thrown away every day.
